Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge

A flat shoreline loop through dunes, ruins and seabird wetlands.

A gentle 2-3 mile walk through a protected reserve of ancient dunes, fishpond ruins and native coastal plants, with whales offshore in winter. Managed by the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust; stay on the paths — the dunes hold archaeological and burial sites.

Lāhainā Pali Trail

The old kingdom-era trail over the ridge, with whales below and windmills above.

A hot, exposed 5-mile crossing (or shorter out-and-back from either end) climbing 1,600 feet over the Kealaloloa Ridge on a pre-highway footpath. From the top: the whole isthmus, Haleakalā, and in winter the whale-filled channel. Start at dawn from the Māʻalaea side and carry more water than seems reasonable.
