Whale Watching (December–April)

Humpbacks breach in the shallow channel — some of the best whale watching on Earth.

Thousands of North Pacific humpbacks winter in the ʻAuʻau Channel between Maui, Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi. Boats depart West Maui and Māʻalaea harbors in season; peak action runs January through March, and you'll often spot spouts from shore.

Kāʻanapali Beach

Three miles of resort shoreline with snorkeling at Puʻu Kekaʻa (Black Rock).

The beach path links the Kāʻanapali resorts along a long golden strand. Snorkel the reef at Black Rock in the morning calm, and stay for the evening torch-lighting and cliff-dive ceremony at the point.

Waiheʻe Ridge Trail

A ridgeline climb into the green heart of the West Maui Mountains.

About 4 miles round trip and 1,500 feet up a spine of the West Maui Mountains, through guava and ohia to a summit platform above the valleys. Go early — clouds swallow the views by mid-morning and the trailhead lot fills.

Nakalele Blowhole

A geyser-like blast through the lava shelf on the wild northwest coast.

On the winding road past Kapalua, surf pressure fires seawater high through a hole in the shoreline lava. View from a safe distance uphill — the shelf near the blowhole is genuinely dangerous and people have been killed getting close.

Lāhainā Historic District

The former royal capital and whaling town, recovering from the 2023 wildfire.

Lāhainā's Front Street and its landmarks — including the famous banyan tree, which survived and is regrowing — were devastated by the August 2023 fire. Recovery and rebuilding are ongoing; what is open to visitors changes over time. Check current local guidance before visiting, follow all posted restrictions, and treat the town as the community's home first.
